Product Description
If you've ever seen video of those giant, articulated robotic arms in an auto assembly plant doing their thing, you know what true modern marvels they are. The speed and precision with which they grasp a part, swing it into place on the chassis, or make spark-spewing spot welds in rapidfire succession, really blows the mind. So what if each robotic arm replaced about 200 human workers. They kept wanting a lunch break every day, and medical benefits. Well, the Robotic Arm Edge is a second-generation, scaled down version of the real deal and it hasn't put anyone out of work. In fact, it has probably created a job or two at the factory of OWI, the premier manufacturer of consumer robot kits. You build the robot arm and its cabled control console from plastic-molded parts and hardware following the illustrated assembly manual. Once they are assembled (and no soldering is required), you use the five levers on the controller to command the arm to move in any of 12 different ways. Five gearboxes, five joints, and five motors actuate the gripper open and close motions, wrist motion of 120 degrees, an elbow range of 300 degrees, base rotation of 270 degrees, base motion of 180 degrees, vertical reach of 15 inches, and horizontal reach of 12 inches. The arm can lift small objects weighing up to 3.5 oz. An LED search light on the gripper illuminates the target object and allows nighttime play.

5 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, great for the mechanical minded   June 8, 2009

The most difficult step is building it properly. You must take your time and offer loads of patience. The rewarding part takes place when construction is complete. The robotic arm is adjustable(you can assign different functions to different buttons and switches), flexible, and inexpensive when compared to others of similar quality. If you like toys and gadgets of this nature, I would strongly recommend it, I really enjoy it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun little robot arm   December 26, 2009

I had great fun putting this together. It's fun to play with too! All the motors worked out of the box. Refrain from breaking all the pieces off from their racks at the beginning; the diagrams are clearly labeled and the racks help you locate pieces you need at each step. Only reason I gave 4 stars on durability is because I haven't had it long enough to really tell. I may re-judge later when I know how long it works.

Another reviewer commented on having difficulty with the nuts in the gearbox housings. They aren't that bad. Use the needlenose pliars, as is recommended in the instructions, play with it until you get the rotation of the nut right, and press it in. Most of them will go in the same way, though there is one slot in each housing you'll need to do differently. May take a little trial and error, but once you get them right, they'll stay.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for kids   June 19, 2010

This is a good intro into robotics. I got it for father's day and made me very happy. It took me about 3 hour to build. Couple of things to keep in mind:
-Some of the screws look a like but are not. I would say to sort them before hand so not to get them mixed up.
-I was surprised the gears have no lubrication. This could make it quieter. I think this is something you could add your self. Just be careful not to degrade the plastics.
-I would like to have seen a DC adapter rather than batteries. I may build one.

With the simple pin-out system, it should be easy to hack.

My daughter (7 years old) and and I had th best time assembling and building this robot.
She was so proud of herself building with motors, gears and wires.
Best bonding time

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!!!   January 11, 2010

I am sooo popular for buying this for my son for Christmas! He loved putting it together with his dad, and loves using the finished product. Right now he is using a remote control he assembled himself to control a real robotic arm as it picks up cheerios and puts them in my son's mouth! How cool is that? The range of motion and "dexterity" of this robot are impressive!

If your child is careful and patient, has a willing adult helper and has any interest in robots, electronics, or engineering, you can't go wrong with this fantastic product, especially for the price. You get 2 products in one: a fun building project, then a super fun gizmo to play with. I am so happy I bought this!
