Great model rocketry starter kit February 26, 2007 E. Reyes (California) 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
If you are interested in model rocketry, this is definitely the right place to start. This kit includes everything you need to send you rocket to the heavens, such as a complete launch pad system with launch controller, and two different rockets. The only things you have to supply are plastic cement, white glue, and the engines, which you can purchase at most hobby shops or sometimes your local WalMart. The best part of this kit is the fact that the rockets are two different skill levels so you can determine exactly how involved you wish to get into the model rocketry hobby. The larger "Amazon" rocket is skill level E2X, which only requires glueing a few pieces together and slapping on the decals. The smaller Crossfire ISX is skill level 1, which requires a little bit work to put together and you have to paint it yourself. This set is perfect for both adults looking to get into the hobby and children/teens with the appropriate adult supervision.
a great starter kit for a great price September 16, 2009 GRH (Los Angeles, Ca.) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This kits is excellent and at an excellent price. It comes with everything you need to launch minus batteries, engines and wadding. The thing i like the best about this kit is that the two rockets are from different skill ranges. The big one "amazon" is really simple and requires no painting or cutting. My 9 year old neice could of put this together just use a little glue and put on stickers. The smaller one "crossfire" is a skill level 1 kit. You will have to cut, sand, measure and paint but is more enjoyable since you actually have to make the rocket. This kit is great for kids getting interested in rockets cause in a few hours they can launch the big easy rocket and if they're up to it spend a day building the smaller one and then launch that one. Also great for dads who are going to build it with their son cause the son can build (and will want to cause its so big) the "amazon" and the dad can start to build the crossfire. Also the two rockets are very differnt the amazon will go about 600ft (depending on the engine used) while the crossfire will go 1200ft at lighting speeds. pros and cons on the differences are that the higher it goes the harder it is to track down after cause it can drift farther while decending and is hard to follow on its way up but is exciting. while the amazon will never leave your sight and doesn't drift that far due to its larger size and weight, just not quite as fast off the pad but still cool cause your launching a 3 ft rocket up. all and all if your looking to get a starter set you can miss with this, just remember they will need engines, wadding and AA batteries. happy flying
Great beginners kit April 5, 2008 Benjamin C. Davis (Raleigh, NC USA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a great starter kit. I am a 7th grade teacher and needed a launch pad and controller and this kit is actually a better deal than buying them separately...like getting two free rockets. I gave the two rockets to two other staff members and they loved them! Our rocket day went great and everything worked the way it should have.
Perfect starter package February 1, 2010 Mike J (Louisville, CO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this for my 7 year old daughter for Christmas. At that age it takes quite a bit of guidance but there ar a few tasks they can take to help build the rocket, especially the Amazon rocket which is very easily assembled with minimal supplies (basically glue).
Our launches went perfectly. One launch with the Amazon practically landed on the launch pad (the rocket is very stable). My daughter and her friend wanted to keep launching until we ran out of engines, so we did and had a great time. I highly recommend this product for adults and kids alike, it's a ton of fun and a great hobby to get kids into.
Fantastic Starter Set December 27, 2009 Mitch Gant (California) It has been probably 30 or so years since I last had an Estes model rocket. I remember them fondly from my youth and so I thought it might be a fun experience for my 8-year old as well. This is a great set to get started as it includes an easy (and very big) rocket and a more difficult (and smaller) rocket. The set also includes everything but the engines and recovery wadding both of which you will need (the ignitors and plugs come with the engines). The difficulty comes in the building stage with the larger Amazon rocket requiring only model and white glue while the smaller rocket needs paint. I have not yet tried the smaller rocket opting to get into the sky quickly. The instructions for the Amazon rocket are straightforward and I do recommending testing the fit dry first. We had no issues nor need to trim any pieces, but you want to make sure before you commit with glue. I would guess we spent about 30 minutes or so in assembly outside of drying time. We let the rocket completely dry for 24 hours before we took it out.
The launching process could not have gone better. We choose a day that wasn't particularly windy and we had a good size open field in which to launch. We did two launches and both went off without a hitch. We used C6-5 rocket engines which is perfect for the Amazon. It goes plenty high, but not so high that you cannot see each stage. We were able to see it reach its apex, level out, and finally engage the parachute. Watching the chute come out was thrilling (I was very afraid it wouldn't work and the rocket would become a missile). The wind carried it a bit (which is why you want both a large field and a relatively calm day) but due to the size of the Amazon, the red chute, and the ability to follow it the whole way, we had no issue retrieving the rocket. The chute worked well and the rocket landed each time pretty softly. In fact there wasn't even a scuff on the rocket. Make sure kids don't grab it right away when it lands because the engines can still be pretty hot.
I cannot recommend this set any more highly. The rocket is impressively big and the launch will delight both young and old. I only wish we bought more engines to begin with, but I will be ordering plenty more now that I know everything works so well.
Have fun!
